Yesterday i was supose to go to Kuramadera temple on mount Kurama (North Kyoto). But was raining so i decide to do it this morning before start my journey. A walk along the Kamo river and a local train to reach Kurama. Front of the main temple you can find a point to stand and refill your vital energy. After asking for blessing and protection during my trip, i enjoyed the view and had a little meditation.
I'm now ready for back in town and start my long journey.
Today the old tokaido road isn't really visible (except few exceptions).i will try to follow the old itinerary the must i can. the actual Tokaido, the road 1 and the train line using the old way. But you are in japan and you can see many small historical signs from the past way as sanctuary, temples, stones, monuments, old houses.
Where was the old Kisatsu juku tokaido station is now a commercial area without real interest. In the city you have some basic temple and a small cover market as you can find in many cities here. around 25km from sanjo bridge i decide to stop here in hotel 21.
I start to walk at 11:30 with sunny day. would be better to start early because not many shades on the way. first part of the road its about Auto dealers, pachinko, hotels and restaurant. after you can use some side road. near Ishibe but until you arrive near koka it's just a road.
today was challenging i walk all the day 7:15 to 19:15 for over 60km. first part of the road was tokaido pretty nice through the contry side with tea and rice plantations. i pass through the montain area until Seki. where i start one additional trip to Ise where you can find one of the must important Shrine for Japanese.
In Tsuchiyama-juku it's nice typical street tokaido style on the right side of the main street. but i didn't fund the bridge. I was looking for nice place to do a break and i fund this beautiful sanctuary with lot of shade and this stairs down to the river where you can relax. when i go back to walk i just took on the left and fund the bridge and the view you can actually see on the old estampe.
Nothing really visible from the old Sakashita-juku, only few normal houses. along the river you have the choice ro follow the expressway but that much nicer to use the small road on the other side of the river, one kind of hidden lost shrine is on the wood in begining of this secondary road.
Seki-juku its one other of the old tokaido spot still visible today. you definitely have to stop here and enjoy the main street with some shop and restaurant. From here i start my additional trip to Ise. in old time japanese travel to ise on the old ise highway. (i still have 30km to walk to reach my hotel).
This time was hard, the faster road was some moment without path for pedestrian and lot of trafic. if you go to Ise don't take the same way than me for this part. i can't really take pics because im focus on the road. but all around its country side with rivers and mountains on the side. i succed after 12hours on the road to arrive at the hotel at 19:15 before sunset (i didn't want deal with musquitos here). every times i stoped 10s my calves being so tense than i need 10min to start walk not too badly. my hotel room was big but the best was the onsen really good for recovery. hopefully i had pansement to cover my tatoo forbidden in public bath.
Today i start to walk from 10:00 check out time. was hard to start but the road was nice and was sunday so i can observed kids playing baseball or trying to catch frogs and families pick-niking near the river. sunday is same than in france. i fund a kind of coin so i decided from now its my lucky coin. sometimes in japan you don't know why you can find things you don't expect as this chalet and this crazy wedding chapel/cathedrale/hotel.
i discovered also the old ise highway i will use to come back. at the end the road being annoying and sometime unsecured for pedestrian so i have to use other itinerary to join Ise and my first guest house of the trip.
