Let’s talk about the exercise we did in the last class. We studied about the genetic, the DNA and what is caused by DNA. Indeed, each person of the world is unique, we don’t have the same parents, we are more than 7 milliards of people in the world. We are different of our neighbor but in the same time, we are identic. Why can we say that? We have two legs, two hands, two eyes, one mouth. So, we are identic in the scientific definition, we are identic as 99,9% of our neighbor. The only difference is microscopic, it’s about our DNA. In this English class, we are Chinese, Thai, Colombian, African or French, there is a big open-minded about our origin.

Different signs with the same meaning

Later, we did an exercise about different groups and how can we classify them with one element of nature for each group: fire, water, earth, sun and air. All students of this class began in the same way, to meet one or two people to work with them and find the solution, easier. What we understood after few minutes is we need people and we can’t success without help. At this way, we continued to talk with others and we noted that we have to be organized thankful to our messy, we were too dispersed. During this exercise, no leader was found, just few people continued to work and work.

At the end, we understood that people/element has his/its family. It exists a lot of culture and we can’t judge one of them, because we don’t know well those cultures. Those cultures have the same subject, for example fire and their people will don’t use at the same way to success to have fire.

To conclude, this exercise learns about us and about others, a lot of things and break prejudices. As far I’m concerned, I like this subject even if at the beginning I didn’t understand why we were talking about that.

I choose this symbol because it represents me at 100%. I come from France, the Eiffel Tower is its main symbol. Its pillars represent my family and friends. This is the first time I've been away so long and so much. The floors represent my personality when people get to know me. You have to climb the stairs so that I can trust and discover who I really am. The Eiffel Tower seems cold and rigid from the outside, but inside you discover when you climb the stairs that it is a monument that deserves to be known, it’s me. You never know when you've reached the highest floor, and you can stop quickly to get down quickly. I am difficult to really know but I give my true trust to people who will not give up on me, or so I hope. This symbol represents me by my pillars, my personality but also by my French origin.

Let’s talk about the exercise we did in class. We had to communicate with our classmates and most particularly with just one classmate we didn’t know. My classmate was Mohammed, he is from Egypt but now he is living with his family in the United States.

How can we communicate without alphabets or numbers?

This exercise forbids us to speak, to use alphabets and also numbers. It was really difficult because we aren’t artist. If one time, you see me in a artist class, it wasn’t normal, I’m wicked in drawing. In that way, we learn a lot of thing in a different way. Mohammed had a idea to give the age of us to the other one: to draw circles, the number of circles tell us our age. It was a little long because he is 22 and me 18 but it was fun. It’s the same to know where we are from, we draw an Eiffel Tower for me and pyramids for him.

This exercise learnt to us a lot of things because we understand well that, it isn’t because we are different, we are from different cultures, that we can exchange about our life without speaking. I liked to do this exercise, it’s a way to understand the language and how people communicate when they don’t have words. We can imagine that first humans can talk with others by drawing or making signs.

It’s really interesting and I recommend you try it!

What is the difference between clipart and emojis and why people use it?

The generation of clipart and the one of emojis are really different. Indeed, the generation of clipart were discovering a totally new thing. Technologies were appearing in the beginning of the 21th century. I asked few people who used a little clipart, but I don’t find people who used it a lot. They told me “We used it because it was fun, in our presentations or something else”. They didn’t use it a lot in their messages. Nevertheless, at its opposite, emoji’s users are immersed in this world. It’s the current world for them to use it and to use technologies. Why are they using emojis? They’re using it to be fun and to don’t write something, it’s easier and faster. We can write a sentence without words and with only emojis. (i.a. See the photo at the bottom) Moreover, I think if we talk about differences between emojis and clipart, the first one is the year of it. Technologies change a lot of things and emojis are just a evolution of clipart. They have the same objective and they are just different because of the difference of generation, technologies.

This is my pyramid of Maslow: A shoe

This is my pyramid of Maslow

1) The outsole represents the essential foundations that must be in place: principles or values for example

2) The middlesole represents the experiences that have taught us about our mistakes or successes

3) The innersole is the image of our character, of ourselves, who are we really within ourselves?

4) The heel reinforcement is our entourage that follows us no matter what happens

5) The hard end of a shoe can represent our choices that we made alone

6) Interior materials represent our comfort zone, which is not necessary but allows us to feel comfortable

7) And finally, laces are everything that is not necessary for our lives in itself, but that allows us to be happy, such as hobbies, be with my family and my friends

Hello everyone!

Today I'm going to talk about an experience I had never had before I was in Boston. Just a reminder, this is the first time I have lived alone and away from my family. It is a very rich experience, given that I am 5,600 kilometres from France.

But what happened this weekend? Well, I had a surprise visit from a mouse, a little grey mouse. Some may say she must have been cute. But mice are my phobia, and seeing one in my room when I have all my stuff there, no, she wasn't cute. But what did this story teach me? Removing as an answer, that I was afraid. I learned that you can go beyond your limits and learn to manage all possible situations. I also learned some vocabulary and that in Boston, seeing mice is normal.

I first visited an American hardware store. I asked the seller directly what I wanted because the store was big and I didn't want to get lost. Then new problem when we arrived at: how do we get a mouse trap? Well, it turns out the tutorials on youtube are very good. So after several attempts, I managed to set the mouse traps not without difficulty. Especially since I had once succeeded, but I forgot to put the bait.

And finally I placed them in my room where I saw the mouse. Now I'm just waiting to see a dead one or not see one at all.

When you think of the United States, you think of heat, sun, holidays... Well, no, the student reality is catching up with us.

Boston during Summer

Tell you that we had a very nice and warm beginning of September. Unfortunately, it is autumn. It is impossible to say that the seasons are the same in every continent. In France, autumn means mild temperatures, even if it is currently a little cold. Here in Boston, autumn is winter! We, the French, are not ready to survive the winter. Winter is coming! And we're going to die...

Boston during Autumn

This week, the rain was more than present. However, it was cold every day of the week except Wednesday when it was hot and heavy. Finally, when I say cold, it is in reference to our French feelings. The Americans will say it was good. I was able to observe a huge difference between the Americans and the French. The latter are recognizable because they are the only ones with sweaters, coats and scarves. The Americans are still in flip-flops, shorts.... That's when we think it's going to be a harsh winter and we better keep our biggest sweaters, our warm coats in our closet.

I then remember from this week that we will have to adapt to the climate to return unharmed. But I can't wait to discover winter and see Boston under the snow!

This weekend, I went to Niagara Falls and Toronto. This is my first experience of travelling abroad without my family. I first travelled independently for the first time. It taught me to buy my tickets myself, to organize the trip and the steps to take. It is a very lively experience especially since it was between friends.

I only realize today that this journey was not just a journey, but a stage in my life. This step allowed me to learn to live my life by myself, that it is a chance to be here and that I must take advantage of it. I share my life with my family but I must also live it above all. I am more than happy to have gone to Canada. I just laughed, lived in the present moment and just had fun. Going to visit, travelling allows you to recharge your batteries and get some fresh air in your mind to get back on track. It has been almost 2 months since I arrived in Boston, USA. The first one passed slowly, you shouldn't hide it, but this second month, I didn't see it pass. I feel like I left a month ago and am living my best student life.

This trip was long, I did 29 hours by bus... It's a lot, but it went fast at the same time. We could compare this trip to my expatriation. At first, it was long, you had to get used to sitting and keeping busy during the trip. But in the end, it went by very quickly, we were excited to arrive at Niagara Falls and Toronto to discover something new. We realize that time passes but that we must act to make it productive and enjoyable.

If I had to talk about this weekend, I would thank the people who were with me because it was beneficial for me but also for those around me for giving me the opportunity to participate. This weekend went by so fast that I don't feel like I'm gone. But at the same time, I feel like I've been away for more than a week.
